Job Profitability Calculator
Calculate your true profit per job — including labor, materials, and overhead — to understand exactly which jobs are worth taking and how to price for growth.
Know Your Numbers Before You Commit
Most service business owners know their revenue. Far fewer know their actual profit per job. The difference between a busy business and a profitable business often comes down to understanding what it truly costs to complete each job.
This free calculator breaks down every cost component — labor, materials, and overhead — so you can see exactly what you’re keeping on every dollar you invoice.
What This Calculator Measures
Revenue — The total amount you invoice for the job.
Labor cost — Your technician hours multiplied by the effective hourly rate. This should include the fully-loaded cost of your labor, not just the hourly wage.
Material / parts cost — Any supplies, parts, or consumables purchased specifically for this job.
Overhead allocation — The percentage of your general operating expenses (rent, insurance, vehicles, software, admin) that you assign to each job. Most service businesses allocate 10–20% of revenue as overhead.
How to Use Your Results
- Net profit margin above 30% — Excellent. This job type is highly profitable and worth prioritizing.
- Net profit margin 15–30% — Healthy. Keep an eye on costs but this is sustainable.
- Net profit margin below 15% — Review your pricing or cost structure. Small inefficiencies compound quickly.
- Negative margin — You’re losing money on this job. Reprice it or stop taking it.
Pricing for Profit
Once you know your true cost per job, you can work backwards from your target margin to set prices. If you want a 25% net margin on a job with $200 in costs, you need to charge at least $267.
Use this calculator regularly — especially when evaluating new service types, hiring additional labor, or considering a price increase.
